This heart-opening posture stretches the chest, abdomen, hip flexors, and thighs, while improving spinal mobility and posture. Ustrasana also encourages deep breathing, helping to release tension, increase energy, and promote emotional openness.

How to Practice Camel Pose
- Kneel on the mat with your knees hip-width apart.
- Keep your thighs vertical and press the tops of your feet or toes into the floor.
- Place your hands on your lower back with your fingers pointing downward for support.
- Inhale and lengthen your spine, gently lifting your chest.
- Exhale as you slowly lean back from the upper spine, keeping your hips over your knees.
- If comfortable, reach one hand and then the other to your heels.
- Allow your chest to lift toward the ceiling while gently relaxing your head back only if it feels comfortable.
- Keep your neck long and breathe slowly.
- Hold the pose for 3–5 deep breaths.
- To come out, bring your hands back to your lower back, engage your core, and slowly return to an upright kneeling position.
Contraindications
Avoid or modify Camel Pose if you have:
- Recent neck, shoulder, or back injuries
- Severe lower back pain
- Herniated disc or spinal conditions unless guided by a qualified professional
- Uncontrolled high or low blood pressure
- Migraine or dizziness
- Knee pain (use extra padding under the knees or modify the pose)
If you feel compression or sharp pain in your lower back or neck, gently come out of the pose.
Practice Tips
- Warm up your spine with gentle backbends before attempting Camel Pose.
- Lengthen your spine before leaning backward.
- Keep your hips directly above your knees rather than pushing them backward.
- Engage your core and thighs to support your lower back.
- Lift through your chest instead of collapsing into the lumbar spine.
- Keep your breath slow, smooth, and steady.
If reaching your heels is difficult, keep your hands on your lower back or tuck your toes under to bring the heels closer.
