Supported Viparita Karani (Legs-Up-the-Wall Pose)

A Restorative Pose for Relaxation, Circulation & Renewal

Introduction

Supported Viparita Karani, also known as Legs-Up-the-Wall Pose, is a gentle restorative yoga posture where the legs are elevated while the body rests comfortably with support. This calming pose encourages relaxation, releases tension from the lower body, and allows the nervous system to settle.

Unlike active yoga poses, Viparita Karani focuses on rest, breath awareness, and gentle restoration. It is suitable for beginners, seniors, and anyone looking for a peaceful practice to unwind after a busy day.

With the support of a wall, bolster, cushion, or folded blanket, this pose can be adapted to make it more comfortable and accessible.

How to Practice Supported Viparita Karani (Legs-Up-the-Wall Pose)

  1. Prepare your support
    • Place a folded blanket, bolster, or cushion near a wall for extra comfort.
    • Find a quiet space where you can relax.
  2. Sit beside the wall
    • Sit sideways with one hip close to the wall.
    • Slowly turn onto your back while bringing your legs up the wall.
  3. Position your body comfortably
    • Allow your legs to rest vertically against the wall.
    • Place a cushion or bolster under your hips or lower back if needed for support.
  4. Relax your upper body
    • Rest your arms comfortably by your sides with palms facing upward.
    • Relax your shoulders, jaw, and facial muscles.
  5. Practice mindful breathing
    • Close your eyes and take slow, deep breaths.
    • Allow your body to soften with every exhalation.
  6. Stay and relax
    • Remain in the pose for 5–15 minutes.
    • Slowly bend your knees and roll to one side before coming up.

Modification:

  • Place a bolster under the hips for a more supported version.
  • Keep knees slightly bent if straight legs feel uncomfortable.
  • Practice with legs resting on a chair instead of a wall for a chair-supported variation.
