Trikonasana (Triangle Pose)

Introduction

Trikonasana, also known as Triangle Pose, is a classic standing yoga posture that creates a beautiful balance between strength, stability, and flexibility. The pose involves extending the body sideways while keeping the legs strong and the spine lengthened, creating the shape of a triangle.

Triangle Pose helps open the hips, stretch the side body, and improve awareness of posture and alignment. It is a grounding pose that encourages focus, steady breathing, and connection between the body and mind.

Suitable for beginners and experienced practitioners, Trikonasana can be modified with a yoga block, wall support, or a shorter stance to make it accessible for different abilities.

How to Practice Trikonasana (Triangle Pose)

  1. Begin standing
    • Stand at the top of your mat with your feet together.
    • Take a deep breath and prepare your body.
  2. Create your stance
    • Step your feet wide apart, about 3–4 feet distance.
    • Turn your right foot outward and keep your left foot slightly turned in.
    • Keep your legs strong and grounded.
  3. Extend your arms
    • Stretch both arms out to the sides at shoulder height.
    • Keep your chest open and shoulders relaxed.
  4. Move into the pose
    • Reach your right hand forward and slowly tilt your body to the right.
    • Place your right hand on your shin, ankle, yoga block, or the floor.
    • Extend your left arm towards the ceiling.
  5. Lengthen and breathe
    • Keep your chest open and spine extended.
    • Turn your gaze upward if comfortable, or look forward for balance.
    • Take slow, steady breaths.
  6. Release the pose
    • Press through your feet and slowly return to standing.
    • Repeat on the opposite side.

Modification:

  • Use a yoga block under your lower hand for support.
  • Keep your gaze forward if looking upward causes neck discomfort.
  • Reduce the distance between your feet for better balance.
  • Practice near a wall for extra stability.

Benefits of Trikonasana

1. Improves Flexibility

Triangle Pose gently stretches the hips, hamstrings, inner thighs, shoulders, and side body.

2. Strengthens the Lower Body

Holding the pose activates the legs, ankles, and core muscles, improving stability and strength.

3. Supports Better Posture

The extended spine and open chest encourage body awareness and improved alignment.

4. Opens the Chest and Shoulders

The pose creates space through the upper body, supporting deeper breathing and releasing shoulder tension.

5. Improves Balance and Coordination

The standing position develops focus, stability, and awareness of body positioning.

6. Encourages Spinal Mobility

The gentle side extension helps create movement and length through the spine.

7. Supports Hip Mobility

Trikonasana encourages openness around the hips and pelvis, helping maintain lower-body flexibility.

8. Promotes Mindful Movement

The combination of steady breathing, strength, and balance helps calm the mind and improve concentration.

Contraindications & Precautions

Avoid or modify Trikonasana if you have:

  • Recent hip, knee, or ankle injury
  • Severe lower back pain
  • Neck discomfort that worsens when looking upward
  • Balance difficulties or dizziness
  • Uncontrolled high blood pressure (avoid holding the arm overhead for long periods unless advised)

Safety Tips:

  • Do not force your hand to reach the floor.
  • Keep both legs active and avoid locking the knees.
  • Maintain length in the spine rather than collapsing sideways.
  • Use props for support when needed.
  • Move slowly and mindfully between sides.
